EDHG is a book that contributed based on my personal journal from Feb 17 to Mar 5th, 2011. The pages are designed in collage style due to the contents matter: journal is a piece of everyday life. There is velum papers played in the Feb 22 journal to create an alternative voice for a pause, which are coherent to the subject matter of that particular journal. Most of the images are shot and edited by me, except the ones in feb 26 & 28 (the powerful lady and the figure rabbit).

The Opposite characteristics and friendship between Elphaba and Glinda. Though Glinda is beautiful and popular in her appearance, Elphaba shines through her natural magic tallents and kindness.

The triangle love between Elphaba, Glinda and Fiyero. I followed the formal central display method to create the Mid-century love-letter-like format to state the restriction and difficulties happening in this triangle love.

All these acts that Elphba did for others and animals were for their own goods. She set the animals free, call a magic spell to save Boq’s life, and helps her sister to get away from blames, etc. However, all these kindness was twisted after she had been addressed into a wicked witch.

When the “witch hunting” begins, Elphaba was being chased by everyone, including her siter and those she had helped before. Glinda was the only one who still believes in her but there is nothing she can do to changed the fact that Elphaba is now a wicked witch, who also starts to have doubts in her inner self.

1> To indicate their opposite characteristics, I thought of using positive and negative effects to highlight the different personalities of Glinda and Elphaba.

2> Using handwritten type to create the flow of romantic feelings

3> cubes can indicate the different sides that Elphaba is facing or presenting to the publics

However, many of the forms did not seem to work. Therefore, I have made some changes to adjust its presentation method.

Instead of using cubes, which doesn’t fit into the rest of the series. I decide to create a mess of words to show the struggle that Elphaba is facing within herself.

Wicked is a story of a tallented witch, Elphaba, who was born in green skin. Though she was not being loved by her family and others, Elphaba still remainds a kindness inside her heart. Dued to her unusual appearance, she was not treated with respects by teachers and school colleges, except her best friend, Glinda, who truly believes in her even they had been in love with the same guy, Fieory. Elphaba dislikes how the seniors risk animals’ lives for their own benefits, and intended to set them free from the cages. After she had been announced as an wicked witch because of this act, Elphaba starts to have doubts of the consenquences of being kind.

We are asked to created a series of 3-5 posters, based on the use of typography, to tell the story.

I first broke the story line in 4 parts and sketched down rough thoughts.

The cover is changed a bit by moving the logo up to have a cleaner layout.

The content page is design to be fold in- as the text will be hidden inside the image.

The page on the top is printed on transparency paper (valen) that will be overlay on top the editor page to create an typographical image!

Departments are arrange into two page spread, which follows the similar layout approach of the editor page.

Features: design the future. In this section, I remand the use of typographical expression and intentionally to use the text box to create a visual flow through the spread.

Portfolio: Rare Method. Instead of approaching the spread like a show case of their works, I reduce the use of images for readers to focus on the text. The three TBA boxes indicates that there are going to be more and better creative works announcing to the public.

Then I thought why must use an image on the cover. I decide to cover in half, hopefully to raise a sense of peaking in of the image and highlighted the quote of the issue theme with typographical treatment.

However, since those sections are better to be steady because every issue will be carrying it, I decided to take out the type treatment of the title and going with a more organized, easy-to-follow style.

Concept idea includes:
>foldging experiments
>hidden elements (what is on the paper is not everything)
>reading flow (play with directions that involves with upside down images or opposed reading direction and flowing boxes to challenge viewer’s mind)
>typographical experiment of titles

The task is to re-design the editorial sections from the magazine.

Those includes the cover, content, editor, departments, features and portfolio spreads. After browsing through the texts, I start to analyze on the existed issues.The previous issues:
>are set in strict grid in layout
>often appeared overwhelmed with a page full of text, that doesn’t not interest the viewers to read through
>there seem to be a consistency of color tone (CMYK), which was also applied to the logo
>full of images (focus on visual expression) since there is a need to show awards winners’ works

design directions:
>reduce uses of colors to remand its brand, and avoid competing with the award sections
>keep clean and leave page blank if possible so it is more pleased to read the article

Friend’s profile and settings

First is to change the color of the screens. Because Trutime is meant to be used as a friends connector, the color of the screen should not be as dark as our previous version.

new elements include the group wheel and aligned menu bar

on the top there is a new screen for friendship indicator that links everyone on user’s list and show their relationships

However, I also went to to the black background that we had since it does gives a look of something that is more elegant.
